For the last 2 weeks I’ve been pretty much on the road, on vacation. First we started out camping with the whole family in Algonquin Provincial Park, “the” place to camp in my province, Ontario. And then I braved a long drive to Canada’s capital, Ottawa (I prefer to be in the passenger seat rather than driving, so a 6 hour drive is a lot for me).
In this time, I’ve been savoring a few stolen moments here and there for Chi Baths, deep breathing, brief visual meditations and a few silent meditations. I’ve been doing a few stretches here and there, but right now, I sooooo want to go out for a run and really get my heart going.
What I’ve given up is my morning routine. Actually, I haven’t been doing it consistently all summer. In fact, I’ve been RESISTING it all summer. Although I have enjoyed the mornings where I’ve woken up nice and early, gazed at the bright sun while it’s rising and fully relaxed with a deep meditation, I haven’t been able to convince myself to get out of bed before 6 am every morning when the house is quiet.
You see, I’ve told myself I don’t really need it. I need sleep more. I can do other little things throughout the day, or I allow myself to get distracted with other tasks. Then I notice an unravelling of me after several days like this. I’m not as grounded and things set me off .
I had an aha moment though, this morning, my last morning on the road. I so desperately need my morning routine. Not because it’s a routine, but because it sets the rhythm for me and my day. You see, our body functions on routine… breathing, blood flowing, repairing ourselves at night. And it’s this routine that allows us to do whatever we want to do… because our body automatically takes care of the core needs of our body to enable us to perform.
I now get that my morning routine is the exact same thing. The movement, the breathing, the solitude, it feeds my mind, body and soul, so I can peacefully flow through the day; so I can stay in a high vibration, or at least more easily shift there when I notice I’m not.
A morning routine is just like the underlying beat in a song, It sets the tone and rhythm for the song, so the other sounds and notes can extend from it to make magical music.
It’s 7am and I’ve done a mini visual meditation, and now I’m going to do some delicious stretches and start to get back into my morning routine. Do you have a morning routine that helps you to get into a beautiful rhythm?
