I remember when I started my spiritual journey. I felt like I didn’t fit in to the world as I knew it. I went from feeling lost and inauthentic to a path of starting to discover myself and not sure how to integrate the new version of me into my relationships and my work.
I was changing, growing and evolving. And I find that so many of my clients go through this process too as they begin their spiritual journey. They dive in and become trained in a new modality. They are so excited about sharing their gifts with the world, that they just want to quit their job and do what they love full time!
And while that is exciting and hugely rewarding, while I don’t want to discourage, I also want to consider a few important things to help you succeed.
First, it takes time to build your skills and customer base when offering a new service. And while you may be really good at what you do, the thing that gets in the way for many new practitioners is that they don’t have the marketing skills, accounting skills or business development skills to get things going the way they would like to right from the beginning.
There are a couple of things that are happening…
You’re developing a new language for sharing what you do. You likely are connecting with a new community that are just getting to know you, and it takes time for new relationships and trust to develop, and be ready to buy from you. And you’re just getting started, so you may be conservative in your fees, as you gain experience and knowledge, limiting your revenue while you have growing expenses.
You need to ask yourself, are you ready for this big of a change all at once? Fiscally, emotionally, confidence wise and socially. This is a lot of big change, and if you’re still coming out of the spiritual closet (which is way easier now than it was 10 years ago), you may want to focus on being comfortable with who you are first and start to dabble in offering your services to others to gain clarity and confidence in what you’re offering and how you’re offering it.
And since you know what your current job is like you have a benchmark for measuring how you being the best version of you with a positive mindset, and managing your energy, how this impacts your performance, relationships, ideas for new projects and the results you create.
For me, when I began my spiritual journey, I was working on an event for a not-for-profit organization. I used the job as a spiritual playground where I used my intuition in determining the best days to contact potential sponsors, and for reading people in meetings and I even saw my first aura when I was interviewing a volunteer. And you know what happened?
I was able to develop my spiritual skills, deepen my relationships with my colleagues and (most exciting of all!) plan the most fun and magical event, where we raised the most money ever in the 3 years I planned the event.
It was also magical because I manifested a vision I had for several years to create a red carpet event with velvet ropes, holding back screaming fans as guests arrived, greeted inside the doors by a giant Oscar statue. And the crazy thing is, the committee picked the theme (not me) and I secured a sponsorship with a Decor company, and I left it up to the venue to place all of the cool props, including a giant Oscar straight ahead and just to the right, as soon as we came into the venue- exactly where I imagined it to be.
I have clients who are Accounts Receivable clerks who use their spiritual talents to uplift customers with past due accounts to see how they can more easily pay their bills. I have another client who works at the Stock Exchange and brings a calming and peaceful energy to her workplace and helps her colleagues learn about meditation and spiritual practices.
I have another client who works for the government in a small country. As we started working together, she didn’t like her department, and her colleagues treated her badly. As she boosted her energy and developed her confidence, she became more respected by her colleagues and has since received several promotions and is now being considered for a new position in a department with a really good team!
All of these people are really good at what they do, and they enjoy it just as much as their spiritual interests.
Spirituality is more widely accepted now than it ever has been. If you work for a good employer and enjoy your colleagues, consider building your confidence with who you are and your spiritual gifts at your current job before taking the leap. It just may provide you with the added financial security (I have colleagues who have manifested exit packages to retire early, or as the result of downsizing, to help them with starting their business), or skill building (like learning new marketing approaches) that will help you succeed in your new endeavours.
