It seems to be an accepted practice for people to create resolutions each new year, only to let them fall by the wayside and not come into fruition. It is nothing to break your new year’s resolution, it’s almost expected. Instead of falling into the same old habit, consider creating a New Year’s Intention, putting your heart into how you want to live this year and mindfully considering what you intend to create.
Let’s begin by examining the difference between a resolution and an intention. According to Webster’s dictionary a resolution is “The making of of a resolve; also the purpose or course resolved upon; a resolve; determination.” And the meaning of intention is ” a settled direction of the mind toward the doing of a certain act.” Simply looking at these meanings, you can already begin to see the difference between the creating New Year’s Resolutions versus New Year’s Intentions.
The biggest difference between a New Year’s Resolution and a New Year’s Intention is action. While a resolution sets forth determination, an intention begins the momentum towards accomplishment.
Here are five steps to set your New Year’s Intentions
Get to a quiet space where you can make heart-felt intentions. Meditate, go for a hike and sit in the forest or by the water, do some yoga or however you like to tune in with your soul. This is where your most beautiful creations come from.
Consider who you want to be, how you want to live your life, how you want to contribute to the world and the tools to help you get there. Start writing down all of the things that come to you, just let it flow.
After you’ve prepared your list, review it and really consider each item in your heart. Keep the list short, 5-10 items at the most (you can add intentions as you go along, just refrain from piling on everything at once) and only include the items that make your heart sing and feel good.
Other intentions or ideas can be kept in a wish box.Take time every month to go through your wish box to see if you are subconsciously incorporating some of these intentions or if you need to bring a particular intention out to work on it more consciously.
This isn’t a list that you write and throw into a drawer that you forget about until you go to make you list again next year. These intentions are what you are creating for yourself, in your life this year. They are actionable, and require your presence and attention. Consider adding pictures that help you tune in to the feeling of each intention.
The more time to dedicate to focusing on your intentions (as opposed to the crazy song that plays over and over again in your head the more love you are able to direct to amplify that signal of what you truly want in the universe. According to the Institute of HeartMath’s Energetic Research, “the heart produces the body’s most powerful rhythmic electromagnetic field, which carries emotional information and mediates bioelectromagnetic communication, within and outside the body. This field affects one’s environment in fascinating ways not previously understood.”
Think of your heart as the strongest radio station that can blast out the song of your soul. Sing your intentions, hum them, feel what it would be like to fulfill your intentions, taste the satisfaction of accomplishing these intentions, imagine the impact these intentions will have on the world. Then pay attention to the opportunities the universe brings to you as a result of you sharing your heart-felt intentions.
There has been much research on the benefits of expressing gratitude to live a happier and healthier life. One perception is that it raises your vibration to a place of love, joy and bliss. So, to take a moment each day to acknowledge the steps you’ve taken towards achieving your goals and living your intentions fuels the fire to keep moving forward powerfully.
These five steps assist you in creating and staying in tune with your New Year’s Intentions for the entire year. And if you miss a day, it’s easy to get back on track, because you’ve created a system to support yourself in fulfilling your intentions.
Here’s to a happy and wonderful year! xo
