As you begin on your soul’s journey, you may find yourself at some point standing in the library or book store looking at the shelves of spiritual or new age books, hoping to gain some insight on life, your soul’s purpose or even guidance on how to answer the question “Who am I.”
There are thousands of amazing books out there, how do you even know where to begin?
I would suggest that you begin with the book that you are drawn to. Perhaps you may discover a particular title gets recommended by a few friends or colleagues or comes into your awareness several times (shows up in your facebook feed, or you notice someone else on the subway reading it) , that would be a good place to start. I have had friends tell stories of how a book literally falls off the shelf in front of them, like it is saying “pick me!”
If you are approaching this more logically, you may be interested in an informal survey of over 100 spiritual seekers and everyday souls, I conducted earlier this year.
I set the intention of discovering the top spiritual books that have had the biggest impact on an individual’s spiritual journey.
What I expected to find was a list of 20-30 titles that would easily create a stand-out top 10 list to expand your soul. What I discovered was an extensive list of over 80 soul-stirring books that could have easily been 100 if I had surveyed further. Each book elicited a spark deep inside the reader. Many people provided more than one favourite read.
This article summarizes the top 5 spiritual books:
This book is considered Spiritual Fiction, and was first published in 1993. It takes the main character on an adventure of discovering the truth about insights contained on Peruvian manuscripts .
This is the first of a series of books by James Redfield, which build upon the “Insights” learned in the first book.
Interestingly, this book was recommended to me when I was in my early twenties, but I simply wasn’t ready to read it. I watched the movie version of this book about 15 years later, I borrowed it from my local library. It filled my heart with wonder and curiosity about there being something more than the current religious structure for spirituality.
This book is another Spiritual Fiction novel that talks about a shepherd boy’s journey to discover his “true calling” in life. It’s a story that anyone can relate to about finding the courage to take a new path that you are being called to explore, and learning to trust the “omens” and language of the world.
I first read this book about a year ago and have read two more times since., each time finding deeper meaning and more messages for me about my journey. This book tops my personal list of most impactful spiritual books.
This is actually a series of three books by Neale Donald Walsh where he share his personal conversations with God about how to make life work (book 1), global topics and conversations on how to reclaim yourself (book 2) and universal truths (book 3)
Personally, I have not yet read this book, although writing this article is making me more curious, and a little scared.
You see, I’ve had my own conversations with God since 2011. I have boxes of journals where I would channel messages through me from him. And the idea of reading this book feels a little bit like “been there, done that,” And it also feels like it will be a shakedown of my soul, saying… hey you- remember we talked about this already… let’s get moving on it, ok?
A modest and easy to read self-help book, it outlines a “simple but powerful code of conduct for attaining personal freedom and true happiness.” It teaches you how to live with integrity in a deeply compassionate and drama free way.
The Companion Book provides lessons and real life examples of applying the Four Agreements in your life.
I read the Four Agreements several years ago. And while I found the book impactful at the moment, and just what I needed, I cannot tell you the details of the book or even what the Four Agreements are without peaking inside. Yet, as soon as I open the cover, I remember the power of the simplicity of the book. There is something within the pages that have unconsciously stuck, even if I’m not able to put words to it.
Before the book The Secret, Rhonda Byrne actually created a film by the same name. This popular film was released in 2006, where Rhonda Interviewed several modern day teachers on the Law of Attraction. The focus of the book is about how positive thinking can create life changing results.
Rhonda was featured on Oprah twice, which propelled the book to become a New York Times best seller, and a popular read for those new on their spiritual journey.
I, like many others, saw the movie but have not read the book. While it seems a little cheesy, the concepts introduced are powerful, and it opened the door to many new teachers for me. It was the first spiritual movie I watched and I even made my husband watch it too.
All of these top titles are fantastic spiritual books. Whichever author you are drawn to, you will not be disappointed. You will learn something important in any of these publications. Sometimes the ideas being suggested don’t make sense until you are further along in your journey, so be open to the stories and process them through your life experience to see if their view-points ring true for you.
